In Memoriam: Physicist Peter Antoniewicz

In Memoriam: Physicist Peter Antoniewicz

We were saddened to hear that physicist Peter Antoniewicz died on June 14.

Peter Roman Antoniewicz was born February 5, 1936, in Tarnów, a city in southeastern Poland. He and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1949. Antoniewicz received a Ph.D. in physics from Purdue University in 1965. His research focused on condensed matter physics. He was also dedicated to educating the next generation of physicists. At The University of Texas at Austin, he served as chair of the Undergraduate Committee and as the undergraduate advisor. He also created the Saturday Teachers Workshop for high school science teachers and their students, providing them with demonstrations and experiments they could take back to use in their classrooms.

Read full biography of Peter Antoniewicz, written by his colleague and friend, Mel Oakes, that includes an account of the many challenges he and his family faced during World War II.
