Since 2012, the College of Natural Sciences has offered a Biology Intensive Workshop for entering freshmen prior to the beginning of fall classes. Students experience college lectures and exams, participate in discussion sessions, practice study skills in breakout sessions and get the chance to network with peers and faculty.

The Biology Intensive Workshop is an optional complimentary workshop for entering CNS freshmen who are registered in BIO 311C by July 20, 2022.

Workshop activities

Workshop participants will be invited into a temporary Canvas coourse with all workshop materials and resources provided. The workshop is designed to help freshmen entering BIO 311C to understand UT’s course expectations and to introduce you to UT resources for learning biology.  The workshop will include lectures, helpful learning strategies, and breakout groups for problem-solving. You will take short college-level practice quizzes (questions from BIO 311C exams) and discuss the answers afterwards.

Workshop schedule

The 2022 Biology Intensive Workshop will have four Zoom sessions and one optional in-person session on the UT Campus

1. Three Online Zoom Workshops, each focused on a particular BIO 311C topic (to be announced) and includes practice problems and a quiz. You may sign up for any or all of these topic workshops.

Tuesday August 16, 10:00-11:50 am
Tuesday August 16, 1:00-2:50 pm
Wednesday August 17, 10:00-11:50 am

2. A Zoom meeting talking with your own fall 2022 BIO 311C instructor and classmates, Wednesday August 17, 1:00-1:50 pm. (This is always a popular feature of the Workshop!) followed at 2:00-2:50 pm by a presentation of resources and opportunities for new BIO students at UT Austin.

3. An informal, in-person get-acquainted session, 6:30-8:00 pm Tuesday, August 23 (the second day of classes) on campus in WEL Hall. You will work in small groups with your BIO 311C classmates on case studies and problems. Limited seats available; students who participate in several of the Zoom workshops will be invited to attend.

Please email Dr. Ruth Buskirk, rbuskirk@austin.utexas.edu with any additional questions (after reading through all of the information on this site), and please put 'Biology Intensive Workshop' in the subject line.
